A quiet town with a proud past, a hopeful future… and nothing unusual to report.
About Playfield, NJ
Founded in 1971 at the height of American innovation and optimism, Playfair, New Jersey is a master-planned community that blossomed around the famed Wonder Joy Toy Company. What began as a company town soon became a symbol of progress, family values, and creative spirit.
In its early years, Playfair was hailed as a model municipality — boasting clean streets, beautiful parks, affordable housing, and a population full of smiles. At its peak, over 8,000 residents called Playfair home, many of whom worked in or around the bustling Wonder Joy factory. Children laughed, families thrived, and nearly everyone agreed that the town's brightly colored future was secure.
In the early 1990s, following a series of product recalls and minor legal adjustments, the Wonder Joy Toy Company entered a restructuring phase. Although the factory was eventually shuttered, the community of Playfair endured — proud, resilient, and eager to turn the page.
Today, with revitalization initiatives led by Mayor Helen Cray and the Playfair Business and Visitor Affairs Department, our town is poised to become a top-tier destination once again! With attractions like Toyland Park, Marigold Diner, and the Factory Observation Point, there’s never been a better time to explore everything Playfair has to offer.
Visitors often remark on the town’s charming stillness, pleasantly muted skies, and how the streets always feel just slightly quieter than expected. Local leadership takes great pride in maintaining this calm and encourages guests to report anything unusual directly to the Community Safety Line — just as a precaution, of course.
